Bridge in Guatemala

«Concept design of a terminal for the shipment of nickel ore at the Port of Santo Tomas, Guatemala.
Road bridge over the Cahabón River.

Three design options for a bridge crossing over the Cahabón River with a design span of 100 m for two traffic lanes were developed:
— a single-span steel truss with triangular bracing and a lower deck. The overall width of the superstructure (outer edges) is 13 m, and the height of the superstructure is 11 m. The roadway structure is an orthotropic deck;
— a single-span, non-thrust steel arch bridge with a lower deck and a network system of stay suspensions. The overall width of the superstructure (outer edges) is 14 m, and the rise of the arch is 18 m. The roadway structure is an orthotropic deck;
— a single-pylon cable-stayed bridge. The 1.2-meter-high stiffening beam is designed from prestressed reinforced concrete and is supported by eight pairs of stay cables arranged in a “tendon” system, balanced by six pairs of back stays anchored in an anchorage block. Permanent strand ground anchors are used in the anchorage block.
Structural calculations of the bridge are performed for load models T3-S2 and T3-S3 with total masses of 37 t and 41 t respectively, in accordance with the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for Highway Bridge Superstructure – Reference Manual, 2015.
For each option, construction technology and duration were determined, a bill of quantities for the main works was prepared, and based on the bill of quantities, the estimated cost of the facility was calculated.»
